Mediums, Channellers, Psychics, Clairvoyants and Intuitives: What is the difference? How do they work? And why would you see one?

Louise Shilton

The art of channelling spirit is becoming more accepted as a way of receiving guidance for humankind from beings of higher consciousness in the non-physical realms. Channellers are no longer limited to channelling before cosy gatherings of open-minded individuals. With internet technology, they can share channelled messages with audiences worldwide.

Mediumship also involves receiving and interpreting communications from spirit beings. So what is the difference between these two styles of communicating with spirit?

Channelling spirit involves the person moving their conscious mind out of the way to allow the invited spirit entity to speak directly to the intended audience using their vocal chords. The channel’s voice characteristically changes, exhibiting the personality and other qualities of the spirit entity.

Channellers typically repeatedly channel a specific guide or collective of spirit beings with whom they have established a trusting relationship.

During mediumship, the medium’s own trusted spirit guide works alongside them and facilitates receiving communications from a range of other spirit beings. Mediums may only need to connect with individual spirits once, typically at the request of a person seeking contact with their passed-over loved ones or guidance from their spirit guides.

Thus, a channeller allows a spirit entity to communicate directly through them, whereas a medium invites spirit beings to communicate to them.

So what about psychics? Psychic ability is being able to perceive and interpret information that is hidden from the five main physical senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Thus, some people call psychic ability extrasensory perception (ESP) or the sixth sense.

There are four generally recognised psychic abilities: clairvoyance (clear seeing); clairsentience (clear feeling); clairaudience (clear hearing); and claircognizance (clear knowing).

Clairvoyance is undoubtedly the gift most commonly associated with psychics or psychic mediums, and is perhaps the predominant extrasensory ability of many psychics.

The more contemporary use of ‘intuitive’ is a personal choice in how someone describes their abilities to access information energetically to help you gain clarity and navigate life more easily.

Mediums may utilise any or each of the ‘four clairs’ to receive information from spirits. But those using the term psychic or intuitive may be indicating that the way they work involves interpreting the energetic or auric field of the person they are reading for, rather than connecting with spirits.

Why have a reading? What is the potential healing benefit?

Readings can be life-affirming and life-changing; they can open hearts, expand minds, and restore magic and wonder! People seeking contact with the spirits of their deceased loved ones can benefit greatly from a skilled mediumship consultation whether they believe in life after death or are skeptical before the reading. Receiving tangible evidence of a loved one’s spirit can be tremendously reassuring and assist in the process of healing from grief and regaining inner peace.

People seeking life guidance can gain clarity about their challenges and issues, understand their life purpose, and feel more confident in moving forward. Spirit guides have a macro view of our lives and can communicate a higher perspective on what lessons our souls are working on this lifetime.
